Reflections on my time in office

As my year as president of IABC/Topeka comes to an end, I think back to last year at this time when I was busy assembling my board. I feel very fortunate that friends I’ve known for years agreed to serve, along with colleagues I was just getting to know and those I only knew by name.

Now, after working closely together for these past many months, I am so grateful for the new and deepened friendships I will take from this experience. Our board is comprised of talented, dedicated, professional, and just plain fun colleagues who enjoy each other’s company and like to play as hard as they work.

When we talk about why we are members of IABC/Topeka, networking always rises to the top of the list, followed by professional development and opportunities to be recognized for our communications work. But I think the bonds that form through working together as a team make for an even greater and more rewarding experience. As a team, we’ve struggled with how to make our monthly meetings more attractive to our members, how to retain and grow our membership, and how to ensure that our members believe that what we offer through IABC/Topeka is something they can’t get anywhere else.

It is through these challenges that we have learned and grown as a team. In addition, along the way we’ve shared personal struggles, such as job loss, as well as the triumph of finding the perfect job.

I want to thank this year’s board members not only for their time and expertise, but most of all for working together, cheering each other on and dedicating themselves to serving our chapter in the best way they know how. They have been truly the best! I’d like to give a special shout out to board members Lisa Taylor and Marsha Boswell and their committee for the successful and entertaining professional development seminar they orchestrated this year. Job well done!

If you have never served on the IABC/Topeka board or a committee, I highly recommend it. Yes, it will take time, but I guarantee it will be time well spent.

I wish our incoming president, Keri Renner, all the best as she leads our chapter to its next destination. And I wish all of you a wonderful summer filled with all you love best about this time of year.

It’s been an honor to serve you.
